A Word from the Social Work Sites

Social Work – El Callejon

As we (Daisy, Amy, Anna, Karen, Niki, Melanie, and Jackie) started our journey together in the little community of El Callejon, we began to see how God was going to use the people of this town to challenge and move us in amazing ways!

We work with women of all ages as Daisy teaches them many lessons regarding the peace and grace of God.  Our hearts broke when we heard that a young girl of only 11 years was selling herself.  To combat this and other struggles in the community, we try to instill in the young girls the importance of valuing themselves and the truth that according to Jesus they have so much worth.  Then, in the young women’s group, many of them are pregnant with their “husbands.”  We, with Daisy’s knowledge and expertise, helped them finish a project they’ve been working on in order to help them prepare for their newborns.

Of course we are there to serve and encourage Daisy, Amy, and the women and girls of El Callejon.  But, in reality, we return to the base each night with our hearts much more blessed and full of joy after a day of worship, projects, lessons, and tons of joyful children.

Social Work: Los Higos

Every weekday, we meet up with our new friend, Jenna (from Colorado) and our site leaders, Catalina and Heidi, and travel back in the mountains to the very rural community of Los Higos.  Our days are filled with prayer, service, and fellowship with the women and children.

We’ve found that God has filled our hearts with love for the community.  However, we’ve also found that the community is incredibly corrupted, filled with abuse and broken homes.  So in our Bible studies, we encourage the women in their walks with God, emphasizing the value of purity and integrity.

In our time at Los Higos, we’ve witnessed the strength of the women as well as the passion of our leaders for Christ.  We are so blessed to have been able to serve, to grow, and to witness God at work in this community.  We ask that as we finish up this week, you keep us and the community of Los Higos in your hearts and prayers!

By His grace and for His glory,
Tamara Avila and Miss Dueck
